Secondary Information Day

July 13th, 2017 by Jackie

Are you looking for the right secondary school for your child?

We are holding an information day for parents and pupils who are looking for a secondary school placement for September 2018.

The information day will be on Friday 15th September 2017 from 10.00am – 2.30pm. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

We hope the information day will be very helpful to both parents and pupils as it will provide pupils with a taste of life in a specialist secondary school, and help them to get to know some of the staff and other children who may join the school. During the day the children will work with subject teachers and follow a school timetable. All our teachers are qualified and experienced Teachers of the Deaf, and we have a number of Learning Support Assistants who are able to support pupils with any specific learning needs. Break and lunchtimes will be spent with other secondary pupils.

For parents the day will include presentations about the secondary curriculum, speech and language provision, residential provision (if applicable) and presentations from current pupils about their experiences at St John’s, including some of the sixth form students who will give a talk about life at college and the courses on offer.

This is a great opportunity to see what St John’s can offer your child.

If you would like to attend, please contact Mandy Dowson (mdowson@bostonspa.org.uk) 01937 842144.

We look forward to meeting you!

Sunshine in our sensory garden

May 30th, 2017 by Jackie

Transition pupils had a wonderful time selecting and then planting plants in our sensory garden. The whole group visited a local garden centre to buy the plants – luckily the garden centre had a lovely cafe, as all that shopping can be thirsty work!

The afternoon was spent planting and watering, and the garden is now looking absolutely fantastic. As well as flowers, they bought some fruit and vegetables as well, so we are all waiting for the first strawberries and peas to appear.

BBC News School Report

March 16th, 2017 by Jackie

Our aspiring journalists have written some interesting pieces for this year’s BBC News School Report:

Lily, John and Suriya have discussed the importance of keeping fit for young people, and have included some helpful tips to get you started:

Mia and Iqra have written a thoughtful piece about the worries and concerns that young people may have, and how this can affect their mental health:

Kye has investigated the benefits of dog ownership, and talked from personal experience about how his family pet has helped him in the past:

Most people thinks dogs are good for your health

All three reports are interesting and well-researched – well done to all contributors!

Boccia Success

February 20th, 2017 by Jackie

We were delighted to win the Panathlon Boccia Trophy for the third year running after beating Royal Derby School for the Deaf 3-1 in a tense and thrilling final. Both St John’s teams reached the semi finals after finishing top of their groups. Finn, Sol and Leandro didn’t reach the finals, but scored a fantastic victory in play offs to come 3rd overall. Mqhele, Julian and Haider pulled out all the stops to take home the trophy. Well done to everyone who took part!

Sensory Garden Update

December 14th, 2016 by Jackie

050At the end of November we were delighted to learn that we had won £12,000 in Tesco’s ‘bags for help’ awards scheme. This is the maximum award possible, and we would like to thank everyone who voted for us at a number of Tesco stores across Leeds. Work has already started on the next phase of the garden – here is Mrs Barlow trying out one of our new pieces of equipment!

Gold Medal Fever!

October 11th, 2016 by Jackie

It was gold medals galore at St John’s this week when we welcomed a very special visitor. Paul Bennett won gold with the British men’s 8’s rowing team in Rio, and we were thrilled that he was able to spend the morning at school. Everyone was inspired hearing about how the team achieved their goals, and it was really interesting to learn about the rigorous training regime and the hours of practice that Paul and the rest of the team need to do. He tried out one of our rowing machines in the gym, and gave pupils and staff some handy tips and advice. Here are some photos from the day.
