March 16th, 2017 by Jackie

Our aspiring journalists have written some interesting pieces for this year’s BBC News School Report:

Lily, John and Suriya have discussed the importance of keeping fit for young people, and have included some helpful tips to get you started:

Mia and Iqra have written a thoughtful piece about the worries and concerns that young people may have, and how this can affect their mental health:

Kye has investigated the benefits of dog ownership, and talked from personal experience about how his family pet has helped him in the past:

Most people thinks dogs are good for your health

All three reports are interesting and well-researched – well done to all contributors!

Boccia Success

February 20th, 2017 by Jackie

We were delighted to win the Panathlon Boccia Trophy for the third year running after beating Royal Derby School for the Deaf 3-1 in a tense and thrilling final. Both St John’s teams reached the semi finals after finishing top of their groups. Finn, Sol and Leandro didn’t reach the finals, but scored a fantastic victory in play offs to come 3rd overall. Mqhele, Julian and Haider pulled out all the stops to take home the trophy. Well done to everyone who took part!

This is the maximum award possible, and we would like to thank everyone who voted for us at a number of Tesco stores across Leeds. Work has already started on the next phase of the garden – here is Mrs Barlow trying out one of our new pieces of equipment!

Gold Medal Fever!

October 11th, 2016 by Jackie

It was gold medals galore at St John’s this week when we welcomed a very special visitor. Paul Bennett won gold with the British men’s 8’s rowing team in Rio, and we were thrilled that he was able to spend the morning at school. Everyone was inspired hearing about how the team achieved their goals, and it was really interesting to learn about the rigorous training regime and the hours of practice that Paul and the rest of the team need to do. He tried out one of our rowing machines in the gym, and gave pupils and staff some handy tips and advice. Here are some photos from the day.

Exciting Fundraising News

September 13th, 2016 by Jackie

Tesco has recently teamed up with Groundwork on its Bags of Help initiative in hundreds of regions across England and Wales. The scheme will see three community groups and projects in each of these regions awarded grants of £12,000, £10,000 and £8,000 – all raised from the 5p bag charge.

Bags of Help offers community groups and projects in each of Tesco’s 416 regions across the UK a share of revenue generated from the 5p charge levied on single-use carrier bags. The public will now vote in store from 26 September to 9 October on who should receive the £12,000, £10,000 and £8,000 awards. In total, there is over £12.5 million up for grabs.

We are delighted that our sensory garden project has been nominated as one of the top three projects in this region. Our ‘polling station’ will be the Tesco Express store in Collingham – more details of how you can vote for us will follow. In the meantime, keep an eye out on the local press for more information, and check out the Tesco / Groundwork website and twitter feed @Tesco_North
