St John’s Catholic School is a residential and day school for hearing impaired pupils aged 4 – 19, many of whom have additional needs. The school has been a centre of excellence in deaf education for 140 years. St John’s is an oral school where there is great emphasis on the development of children’s spoken language and signing is not used in our teaching. The school is a specialist school for children with sensory and physical needs.

We are looking for caring individuals to join a team of experienced and supportive colleagues to work with deaf pupils aged 4 – 19 in a residential setting. All our pupils are hearing impaired and some have additional special needs. St John’s is an oral school where pupils communicate using speech, so knowledge of sign language is not required.
The duties involve supporting children with homework, participating in evening trips and activities and providing a safe and welcoming residential environment. Some overnight stays are required for which there is an additional allowance. The work is varied, interesting and challenging. Training is provided including NVQ in care work. There is a contributory pension scheme and employee health benefits plan.
