A free one-day educational conference for professionals

St John’s Catholic School for the Deaf
Specialist school and Sixth Form College, St John’s Catholic School for the Deaf in Boston Spa, West Yorkshire, will host our latest free one-day educational conference for professionals on Tuesday June 18th 2019.
The conference will explore how professionals working with children and young people with special educational needs can support their mental-health effectively and build resiliencefor their futures.
We will be joined by our keynote speaker, noted Clinical Psychologist Dr Kerry Audin, who will explore how professionals working with young people with SEN, mental health difficulties and other barriers to learning can be supported through focusing on Positive Psychology including Resilience and developing a Growth Mindset.
Teacher, Pastoral Leader and SLE Callum Wetherill, supporter of the “Ban the Booths” campaign relating to seclusion and isolation of young people in educational settings, will share his views on alternatives for supporting young people experiencing challenge in his presentation “Challenging Behaviour #flipthenarrative”
Mental health support for young people with SEN and how it can be integrated throughout schools will be discussed by Rebecca Hudson, Clinical Team Manager/CAMHS Community Nurse – National Deaf CAMHS and St John’s School Nurse, Kate Adams.
Dr Bridget Nicholas, Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist and Ms Sue Terry, CAMHS Community Nurse will explore Supporting young people with ADHD to build resilience.
Former St John’s pupil Adam Summerscales,now a Media Lecturer, will share his lived experience of what helped him build the resilience he required to succeed in his chosen field.
The day will begin at 9.30am and be completed at around 4pm. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.
Places are limited and available on a first-come, first served basis. There is free on-site parking and no charge for this conference. Certification for CPD will be provided.
