St John’s adopts a deaf dog!
Our school nurse Kate Adams and her family, recently decided to get a new dog from the Dog’s Trust on York Road in Leeds. The dog they chose was a sixth month old dalmatian-collie cross called Flo. Dalmatians are known to have a genetic predisposition to deafness, and whilst Kate knew Flo was deaf, she did not know whether it was a total hearing loss. Kate brought Flo into school, where our audiologist Joy Wade was able to test her and it was found that Flo is profoundly deaf, with no residual hearing.
Kate and her family are training Flo very successfully using signed commands. She recently came in to school to visit the pupils and has been adopted by them as our school mascot.
