Residential Provision

Residential care at St John’s is far more than accommodation – it’s a warm, faith-driven extension of family life. Our weekly boarding (Monday to Friday) provides a safe, structured environment where students feel secure, valued, and empowered to thrive personally, socially, and spiritually.

Every young person has their own bedroom, which they are encouraged to personalise, alongside shared spaces such as comfortable lounges, well-equipped kitchens, and games rooms where friendships flourish. Care is delivered by a dedicated, highly experienced team working closely with teaching and therapy staff to ensure continuity and consistency across all aspects of school life. This integrated approach means every student benefits from holistic support that meets their educational, social, and emotional needs.

Why Choose Residential Care at St John’s?

Guided by Gospel values, our Catholic ethos shapes every moment. Compassion, dignity, respect, and integrity are embedded in our routines, creating a calm, inclusive setting that supports mental and emotional wellbeing.

Local Authority quality assurance visitors praised our care environment as being “welcoming and nurturing,” and they commended our integrated approach where residential care is fully woven into school life, anticipating needs and informing behaviour support plans.

Developing Independence and Life Skills

Independence isn’t taught in isolation – it’s woven into daily life. From planning and cooking balanced meals to learning how to budget and manage household responsibilities, students gradually build confidence and practical skills for adulthood. Beyond the home, they access local community resources, use public transport, and take part in activities that develop resilience and social awareness.

As an independent visitor recently noted: “Students confidently engage in conversation and demonstrate increasing independence within daily routines.”

Independence is recognised through Units of Accreditation, linking care and classroom learning. Many residential students develop friendships where they may previously have lacked a peer group and staff actively promote social skills.

Enrichment and Wellbeing

Residential life is vibrant and purposeful. Evenings are filled with opportunities for fun and friendship – from sports and swimming to cinema trips, bowling, creative arts, and music. Wellbeing is central to everything we do. Staff trained in mental health first aid and our Thrive approach ensure emotional support is embedded into daily routines, creating a safe and nurturing environment where every student feels understood and cared for.

Our in-house therapeutic team – including a school nurse, audiologist, and speech and language therapists, work alongside education and care staff to provide tailored support. This holistic blend of enrichment and wellbeing means residential life at St John’s is not just about living – it’s about thriving.

Relationships are at the heart of our success and Independent Visitor reports consistently describe our provision as calm and homely – a place where students feel safe, supported, and valued.

Strong leadership and a robust safeguarding culture underpin everything we do, ensuring transparency, accountability, and excellence in care. Together, these elements form a community where every child can flourish.

Staff lovingly and skilfully cherish children’s individual traits, personalities and talents.
